Karelia philharmonic Orchestra
Marius Stravinsky is the Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the
Karelia Philharmonic Orchestra (KPO). It was formed in 1933 and is the
largest State Symphony Orchestra in North-West Russia. It comprises
85 musicians and performs more than 40 programms per season. Since
2007, the KPO has been resident in the ballet festival at Savonlinna
(August 2008), given concerts in Finland and Norway (November 2008,
June 2009), a three week tour of France and Switzerland (February
2009) and a seven city tour of Finland in November 2009. The
orchestra has a long established link with the Tchaikovsky Competition
and traditionally offers concerts to the prize winners. Soloists who
have performed with the orchestra are Richter, Gilels, Rostropovich,
Pletnev, Bashmet and Netrebko.
